Watershed Overview

The watershed is located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and is 559 square miles in size with 260 miles of rivers and streams and 123 miles of Lake Michigan coastline. Two identified impaired waters have been identified within the watershed. In general, the wetlands found in the watershed are characterized as coastal wetlands. The Nature Conservancy has identified the Garden Peninsula’s Spruce-Cedar Wet Alvar Woodland as a critical ecosystem and the Dwarf Lake Iris as a critical species in the watershed.

The watershed is primarily forested and wetland. Between 1996 and 2001, there have been slight increases in developed land, grassland, bare land and farmland, and a slight decrease in forest and wetland.
